I have seen males repeatedly this year. It seems that they prefer either platform or hopper type feeders.

As far as food goes, the buntings seem to prefer fruit and nut blend seed and/or thistle/nyjer. A local place that sells birdfeeders nationally recommends white Proso millet, but I haven't found this to be the case. YMMV

I simply put out a combination of fruit and nut seed blend, some thistle/nyjer, and then be patient.

Water source cannot hurt. I put out water daily in two bird baths and it's non-stop action many a day.

Another commenter asked about Scarlet Tanagers. I get them to stop in a couple of times per year. The birds like to feed far higher than most sane people are willing to go, but there are some that will feed them 20 feet off the ground. They visit my open platform feeder only. It's a 12" x 12" base only feeder. Mine is suspended around 6 ft off the ground, and attracts lots of birds. I load the feeder daily with shelled peanuts, a half an orange, a common songbird mix(black oil sunflower, cracked corn, white Proso millet, etc.) and a small cup of grape jelly.

I have almost no idea what the tanager males are after, but they do visit that one feeder. Please note, that if using feed that produces aflatoxin(like cracked corn) when it goes bad to make certain that the feeder is cleaned out of corn(or other) daily. I feed birds at least once per day, every day, so it's routine for me.

If you're like me, and love birds, but don't live in a pristine wilderness environment, then there is work involved. I spend roughly 75/mo on all bird foods, but it works.

A water source may help you attract and maintain birds. They bathe, they drink..todd wrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11201388855795639492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3064100129340456967.post-71863247385641202622016-08-16T15:08:51.912-07:002016-08-16T15:08:51.912-07:00I have an area where some type of grass has grown,...I have an area where some type of grass has grown, producing a big seedhead (not sure what type of grass this is).
